FAQ Board Certified-TeleMental Health Provider

Earning the BC-TMH credential tells clients, employers, insurance companies, hospitals, government agencies and others that you have:

  • Received high-quality, state-of-the-art training in the delivery of telemental health services;
  • Passed a comprehensive examination to assess your knowledge of safe and effective practices in providing telemental health services;
  • Committed to pursuing ongoing telemental health continuing education; and,
  • Confirmed your adherence to codes of ethics governing your profession and credentials.

The BC-TMH is a joint effort between the Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE) and the Southside Telehealth Training Academy and Resource Center (STAR). STAR is a joint program administered by the University of Virginia Center for Telehealth and New College Institute.

Training fees are determined by the pre-approved training provider.

Yes. BC-TMH holders pay a $45 maintenance fee each year.

The pre-approved training certificate is valid for five years. Or you must submit your application within two years of successfully completing the TMH training exam. Once received, your application will remain active for three years. If you do not earn the credential during that period, you will need to reapply.

The TeleMental Health Examination (TMHE) is the comprehensive examination available after the successful completion of all required training and submission of an application for the BC-TMH. You can test from any private location with internet access. The examination fee is $100.

The TMHE consists of 120 multiple choice questions that will assess your knowledge of the safe and effective delivery of telemental health services. You will have 3 hours to complete the examination. You must pass this examination in order to satisfy requirements for the BC-TMH credential.

Yes, you may take the THME a maximum of three times, with a minimum 90-day waiting period between examination attempts. The fee to retest is $100. For authorization to retest after the waiting period, please log into the Credentialing Gateway and navigate to your BC-TMH application. The Reregistration option will be available in the left menu.

The BC-TMH credential focuses on the practical aspects involved in the safe and effective provision of telemental health services. It is available to professionals in a variety of behavioral and mental health care fields.

CCE is discontinuing the DCC credential.

Your BC-TMH application remains active for three years from the date we receive it. If you wish to earn the BC-TMH after the expiration date of your application, you will need to reapply.
